CLAT needs five things: one legal reasoning book, one logical reasoning book, a monthly current-affairs compilation, a newspaper, and previous years' papers. That is it. The Universal or Oswaal CLAT guides work as an all-in-one base, Oswaal's year-wise solved papers are the most useful single purchase, and RS Aggarwal covers reasoning adequately. What most book lists get wrong is recommending thick static-GK volumes — CLAT's GK is passage-based and recent, and those books are mostly wasted weight.
Book choice is the least important decision in CLAT preparation and the one people spend the most time on. Here is a short list and a longer skip list.

- The newspaper is the book. Two long-form articles a day trains English, Logical Reasoning, Legal Reasoning comprehension and Current Affairs simultaneously.
- Buy past papers before anything else. They show you the level, and the level is the thing books misjudge.
- One book per section, finished. Sampling five reasoning books is the most common form of busywork in CLAT preparation.
What to skip, and why #
Thick static-GK encyclopedias (Lucent, Manorama-style annuals) — CLAT's GK is overwhelmingly current-affairs led and passage-based. These books are built for SSC and state exams.
Bare Acts and law textbooks — Legal Reasoning gives you the principle in the passage. Studying actual law adds nothing and encourages answering from outside the passage, which loses marks.
Advanced quantitative aptitude books — Quant is about a tenth of the paper at Class 10 level. A CAT-level quant book is the wrong tool.
Non-verbal reasoning sections — figures, series and pattern questions do not feature in CLAT's logical reasoning.
