Government seats are the ones worth targeting: annual tuition is typically ₹10,000–₹1,00,000 against ₹10–25 lakh a year at private colleges. Admission is entirely through NEET, split 15% All India Quota and 85% State Quota.

The cost gap #
This is the entire reason government seats are so contested. A full MBBS at a government college can cost under ₹5 lakh including hostel; the same degree at a private college routinely exceeds ₹60–90 lakh, and at some deemed universities more. The degree and the licence are identical.

AIIMS — New Delhi plus the newer campuses; admission through NEET, with AIIMS Delhi closing at the highest scores in the country.
JIPMER Puducherry, Maulana Azad Medical College Delhi, Grant Medical College Mumbai, Madras Medical College, Seth GS Medical College Mumbai, Armed Forces Medical College Pune (separate selection stage after NEET), and the long-established state government colleges in every major city.
- 85% of government seats go through state counselling, so your home state is usually where your realistic options are. Domicile is a major advantage.
- AFMC requires clearing an additional selection process after NEET, and comes with a service commitment.
- Newer government colleges have lower cut-offs and the same degree. The gap between a top and a new government college matters far less than the gap between government and private.
- A government seat in another state via All India Quota is genuinely possible but competes nationally, so cut-offs are higher.
