IPMAT cut-offs work in two stages: a sectional qualifying cut-off that only filters, and an overall merit score that decides the call. At IIM Indore the shortlisting score has recently sat in the high-50s to mid-60s percent of the paper for General category candidates; at IIM Rohtak the published qualifying cut-off has been around the 80th percentile overall. Sectional cut-offs at Indore are low — often single digits — because they exist to weed out zeroes, not to rank.
The most common IPMAT mistake is reading a sectional cut-off as a target. It is a floor. The real bar is the composite score.

The drift upward is real but small, and it tracks applicant volume rather than paper difficulty. In a hard year the raw score needed drops; the percentile needed does not move much.
- Do not chase the sectional cut-off. Clearing it guarantees nothing; a single-digit sectional floor is not a strategy.
- Your Class 10 and 12 marks enter the Indore composite directly. Strong boards buy you room in the exam and vice versa.
- Accuracy beats attempts. Indore's negative marking punishes the "attempt everything" approach that works on some school tests.
What to target instead #
Work to a raw-score goal, not a cut-off. For Indore, aim to comfortably clear the mid-60s percent of the paper with high accuracy in Quant; for Rohtak, aim for 85th percentile and above so category and tie-break variation cannot reach you.
