IPMAT stands for the Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test — the entrance exam for five-year integrated BBA+MBA programmes at IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak. You take it straight after Class 12, it tests Quantitative Ability and Verbal Ability, and clearing it puts you inside an IIM at 18 instead of 23.
Most students meet IPMAT late — in Class 12, after someone mentions that an IIM takes students directly out of school. That is the whole appeal: a five-year Integrated Programme in Management ending in an MBA from IIM Indore or IIM Rohtak, with no CAT, no work experience and no three-year wait.
Roughly 30,000 candidates apply each year for about 300 seats across both IIMs. This guide covers what the exam is, who can take it, how it is structured, what it costs and how to plan for it.

The two exams are run independently. "IPMAT Indore" and "IPMAT Rohtak" are different papers with different patterns, and you apply to each separately. A third exam, JIPMAT, covers IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu.
Who is eligible #
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with a minimum 60% aggregate — 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
- Maximum age 20 years as on 31 July of the admission year (25 for reserved categories). This is the rule that catches people out: a gap year can end your eligibility.
- Students appearing in Class 12 in the current year may apply.
- Mathematics in Class 12 is not mandatory for Indore — but the Quant section assumes you can handle Class 11–12 level mathematics anyway.

Marking: +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong MCQ. The short-answer section has no options and no negative marking — you type the number. This is the part most self-prepared candidates underestimate.

All MCQ, +4/−1. No short-answer section, but Logical Reasoning is examined, which Indore does not test.
What it costs — and what you get #
Fees for the five-year programme run roughly ₹30–35 lakh at IIM Indore across all five years, with need-based scholarships and education-loan tie-ups available. IIM Rohtak is lower. Against that, IPM graduates enter placements with the same recruiters as the two-year MBA cohort.
The honest framing: this is a five-year commitment made at 17 or 18. It is an outstanding route if you are certain about management. It is an expensive way to discover you are not.
How to prepare #
Step 1: Fix the arithmetic base first #
Quant at IPMAT is not exotic — arithmetic, algebra, numbers, basic geometry — but it is fast. Two months on fundamentals beats six months of mock tests taken on a shaky base.
Step 2: Practise typed short answers, not just MCQs #
For Indore, solve numericals without options in front of you. The habit of back-solving from choices is exactly what the short-answer section removes.
Step 3: Read for the verbal section daily #
Verbal Ability rewards reading speed and vocabulary built over months. One long-form article a day, every day, beats a vocabulary app in the final month.
Step 4: Plan for WAT-PI from the start #
At Indore, the written test and personal interview carry substantial weight in the final call. A programme that stops at the exam has prepared you for only part of the selection.
