Previous IPMAT papers are the closest thing to an official syllabus, because neither IIM publishes one. Work through three to four recent papers and the pattern is unmistakable: arithmetic and algebra dominate Quant, reading comprehension dominates Verbal, and IIM Indore's short-answer section is where scores are won and lost. Use them as a diagnostic first and a practice set second — most candidates do the reverse.
Everyone downloads past papers. Very few extract the thing they are actually for.

How to use a past paper properly #
Step 1: Attempt it untimed, before you study #
This feels wrong and it is the highest-value step. You are measuring your starting distribution, not your score.
Step 2: Tag every question by chapter #
Build a simple tally. The chapters where you lost the most marks, weighted by how often they appear, are your syllabus in priority order.
Step 3: Study, then re-attempt timed #
Only after you have covered the tagged chapters. Now the score means something.
Step 4: Save the two most recent papers #
Keep them sealed for the final fortnight as full-dress rehearsals under exact exam timing.
- Four papers analysed beat twelve papers attempted. The analysis is the product.
- Do Indore and Rohtak papers separately. Rohtak adds Logical Reasoning and a different balance; mixing them muddies your diagnosis.
- Official papers are not always released. Reconstructed memory-based papers from reputable institutes are usable, but treat exact answer keys with caution.
Where to find them #
Coaching institutes publish memory-based reconstructions each year, and many share them free as lead magnets. Official released papers, where available, come from the IIM admission pages. Avoid unsorted "1000 questions" PDF dumps — they mix difficulty levels and other exams' questions, which destroys their diagnostic value.
