The headline NLU outcome — a ₹18–22 lakh first-year package at a tier-1 law firm — is real but applies to a minority of each batch, concentrated at NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS and a handful of other NLUs. The realistic spread is wide: corporate firm work at the top, litigation starting at ₹15,000–40,000 a month, judicial services, in-house counsel roles, policy and LLM routes abroad. Litigation pays badly for the first three to five years and then diverges enormously.

What actually predicts where you land #
- Moots, internships and publications matter more than marks for firm recruitment. Recruiters read the CV before the transcript.
- Which NLU matters most for tier-1 firm access. It matters much less for litigation, judicial services and policy, where your own record dominates.
- Litigation's early years are financially hard and most people underestimate this. Chambers of senior counsel pay stipends, not salaries. Plan for three to five lean years or do not start.
- The corporate firm path has real attrition — hours are brutal and a substantial share of each cohort moves in-house within five years. That is a normal outcome, not a failure.
The honest version of the top number #
A tier-1 firm recruiting on campus offers a package that exceeds the entire five-year cost of the degree in year one. That is a genuinely excellent return, and it is available to the top slice of the strongest NLUs. Outside that slice, the degree still pays — just on a longer curve, and the curve is steepest in litigation, which starts lowest.
