NEET stands for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. It is the single national entrance exam for undergraduate medical courses in India โ MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, BUMS, BVSc and nursing โ conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) once a year. The undergraduate exam is formally NEET-UG; NEET-PG, for postgraduate medical admission, is a separate exam conducted by NBEMS.
The full form is the easy part. What most people actually need to know is which NEET they mean, and what it controls.

The name is doing real work: it is an eligibility test and an entrance test. Clearing the qualifying percentile makes you eligible to practise medicine in India; your rank then decides which college you enter.
The three NEETs people confuse #
| Exam | Full form | For | Conducted by |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEET-UG | National Eligibility cum Entrance Test โ Undergraduate | MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing after Class 12 | NTA |
| NEET-PG | National Eligibility cum Entrance Test โ Postgraduate | MD, MS, PG diploma after MBBS | NBEMS |
| NEET-MDS | National Eligibility cum Entrance Test โ Master of Dental Surgery | MDS after BDS | NBEMS |
When someone says "NEET" without qualifying it, they almost always mean NEET-UG.
- NEET-UG is the only route to MBBS in India. Since 2016 it replaced every state and private medical entrance, including AIIMS and JIPMER, which were folded in from 2020.
- It covers AIIMS and JIPMER too โ those separate exams no longer exist.
- Foreign medical aspirants need NEET-UG as an eligibility certificate even if they study abroad.
What NEET controls #
Roughly 20โ24 lakh candidates appear each year for about 1.1 lakh MBBS seats and a similar number of AYUSH, dental and nursing seats. Seats are filled through two counselling channels: the 15% All India Quota run by MCC, and the 85% State Quota run by each state. A single score feeds both.
Why "eligibility cum entrance" #
Two distinct thresholds sit in one exam:
Qualifying percentile โ the 50th percentile for General (40th for SC/ST/OBC, 45th for General-PwD). Clear it and you are eligible for medical admission anywhere in India.
Rank โ your position among everyone who qualified. This decides whether you get a government MBBS seat, a private one, or an AYUSH or nursing seat.
Qualifying is not the same as getting in. Each year lakhs qualify and only about a tenth get an MBBS seat.
