IPMAT eligibility has three conditions: you must have passed Class 12 with at least 60% (55% for SC/ST/PwD), be 20 years or younger on the cut-off date (25 for reserved categories), and have completed Class 10 and 12 in the year specified. Maths is not required, no stream is barred, and there is no formal limit on attempts — but the age cap effectively gives you two.
Most IPMAT rejections at the eligibility stage come down to age or a misread aggregate rule, not marks. Here is the exact position at both IIMs.

- Aggregate means overall, not best of five. Both IIMs read the aggregate printed on your marksheet unless the board itself reports only best-of-five.
- The age limit is the real constraint. A student passing Class 12 at 18 has two clean attempts; one passing at 19 usually has one.
- A compartment or supplementary pass is accepted as long as the final aggregate meets the cut-off and the result is declared in time.
Edge cases that actually come up #
Gap year: allowed, provided you still meet the age limit and passed Class 12 within the accepted window.
Open schooling (NIOS): accepted where the board is recognised and the result is declared before admission.
International boards: IB, Cambridge and similar are accepted, with percentage equivalence as certified by the board or an approved body.
Improvement exam: if you re-appear to improve marks, the institutes generally consider the improved aggregate — but the year-of-passing rule can shift, so write and ask before you rely on it.
Diploma after Class 10: a diploma does not substitute for Class 12 for IPMAT.
