To qualify for a rank you must clear both a subject-wise minimum and an aggregate minimum — recently around 10% per subject and 35% aggregate for General, which is roughly 90–110 marks out of 360. To get an IIT seat, the bar is the JoSAA closing rank for your branch, which for CSE at the older IITs means a rank inside about 1,500. Clearing the cut-off and getting a seat are very different things.

- Clear every subject minimum. Candidates with a top-2,000 aggregate have gone unranked on a single subject shortfall.
- Category rank lists close substantially wider than the Common Rank List for the same branch.
- Closing ranks loosen across JoSAA rounds as candidates withdraw — round 1 is not the final answer.
- A rank around 16,000 still reaches an IIT for some branches. Do not assume the exam was wasted.
