JoSAA — the Joint Seat Allocation Authority — runs the single counselling process for all IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. One registration, one choice list, and typically five or six rounds of seat allocation based on your JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank. The decision that matters most is the order of your choice list, because JoSAA allocates strictly by preference order and rank — and the float/slide/freeze choice you make after each round.
Most JoSAA mistakes are not rank problems. They are choice-filling and float/freeze problems made under time pressure.

The process, in order #
Step 1: Register and fill choices #
Every institute-and-branch combination is a separate choice. Order them by genuine preference, not by predicted cut-off — the algorithm protects you, and a lower choice can never be allotted while a higher one is available to you.
Step 2: Round 1 allocation #
You are allotted the highest choice your rank reaches. Accept by paying the seat-acceptance fee and reporting documents.
Step 3: Choose float, slide or freeze #
This is the decision people get wrong.

Step 4: Later rounds #
Seats open up as candidates withdraw, so ranks slide outward each round. Float and slide only ever move you up your own list — you can never be moved down.
- Fill more choices than you think you need. A short list is the most common reason for going unallotted with a workable rank.
- Never order by last year's cut-off. Order by what you actually want; the algorithm handles feasibility.
- Withdrawing a seat is possible until a stated round — after that you are locked in.
- Not reporting or not paying on time forfeits the seat entirely, whatever your rank.
- Keep Category, PwD and DS certificates ready in the exact prescribed format. Document mismatches cause more losses than ranks do.
After JoSAA: CSAB #
Once JoSAA's rounds end, CSAB special rounds fill remaining NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats, including supernumerary seats. It is a separate registration. Candidates who are unhappy with their JoSAA outcome — and those who went unallotted — should plan for it rather than treating JoSAA's final round as the end.
