JEE Main Paper 2 is the architecture and planning route: Paper 2A for B.Arch and Paper 2B for B.Planning, both 400 marks. Paper 2A has Mathematics, an Aptitude test and a pen-and-paper Drawing section; Paper 2B replaces Drawing with a Planning section and is fully computer-based. You can take Paper 2 alongside Paper 1, and a separate exam — NATA — is accepted by many architecture colleges that do not use JEE.

What the Aptitude section tests #
Three-dimensional visualisation, perception of scale and proportion, analytical reasoning, awareness of places, persons and buildings, texture and colour sense, and mental rotation of objects. It is not a drawing test — it is spatial reasoning, and it is very trainable.
The Drawing section #
Two questions, hand-drawn. Typically a sketch from memory or imagination, a composition using given forms, or a perspective view of an urban or landscape scene. Marked on proportion, composition, line quality and presentation — not on artistic flair.
- Aptitude carries 200 of the 400 marks — half the paper, and the most trainable section. Candidates over-invest in Drawing and under-invest here.
- Drawing is marked on proportion and clarity, not artistry. Consistent line quality and correct scale beat decorative detail.
- Eligibility differs: B.Arch requires Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in Class 12; B.Planning requires Mathematics.
- Consider NATA as well. Many architecture schools accept it, and some accept only NATA.
- Paper 2 has its own separate rank list and counselling channel within JoSAA.
