JEE Main is the qualifying exam; JEE Advanced is the IIT entrance. Main is conducted by NTA twice a year, has a fixed pattern, and admits to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Advanced is conducted by an IIT once a year, has two compulsory papers with a pattern that changes annually, and is the only route to the IITs. Only the top ~2.5 lakh Main scorers may sit Advanced. They are sequential stages, not alternatives.

What actually differs in preparation #
Depth over breadth. Advanced asks fewer, harder questions on the same chapters. A candidate who can solve every Main problem in 60 seconds may still struggle with an Advanced multi-concept problem.
Partial marking changes strategy. Advanced's multiple-correct questions with partial marking punish half-knowledge in a way Main's single-correct questions do not.
Unpredictable pattern. You cannot drill a format that changes annually — which is exactly the point.
- You only get two consecutive years for Advanced, against three for Main. That asymmetry catches droppers out.
- Preparing for Advanced covers Main comfortably; the reverse is not true.
- Main's percentile protects you against a hard shift. Advanced has no such mechanism — one paper, one day.
- Advanced requires the 75% / top-20-percentile Class 12 criterion for IIT admission, same as NITs.
