JEE Main Marks vs Percentile: The Formula, Explained
Quick answer

JEE Main percentile is not your percentage of marks โ€” it is the percentage of candidates who scored at or below you in your session. The formula NTA uses is: percentile = (number of candidates with a raw score equal to or less than you รท total candidates in that session) ร— 100. Because two sessions are normalised against each other, the same marks can produce slightly different percentiles in different sessions. Roughly, 250+ marks โ‰ˆ 99.5+ percentile and 90 marks โ‰ˆ 90 percentile, but these shift every year with paper difficulty.

This is the single most misunderstood number in JEE Main. Here is how it actually works.

The formula #

Percentile = (Candidates with score โ‰ค yours in your session รท Total candidates in that session) ร— 100

Three consequences:

It is relative, not absolute. Your percentile depends on how everyone else in your session performed, not on a fixed mark scheme.

The topper of each session gets 100. Every session produces a 100-percentiler, which is why several candidates share "100 percentile" each year.

Percentile is computed per subject and overall. Your overall percentile is calculated from your total raw score, not by averaging your three subject percentiles.

Indicative marks-to-percentile #

Raw marks (out of 300)Approx. percentileApprox. rank band
280โ€“30099.98โ€“100Top ~200
250โ€“27099.5โ€“99.9~1,000โ€“6,000
200โ€“24098.5โ€“99.4~9,000โ€“20,000
160โ€“19096โ€“98.4~20,000โ€“55,000
120โ€“15091โ€“95.9~55,000โ€“1,20,000
90โ€“11087โ€“90.9~1,20,000โ€“1,80,000
60โ€“8075โ€“86Above ~1,80,000

These bands move every year. Treat them as orientation, not prediction.

Why normalisation exists #

JEE Main runs in multiple shifts across two sessions, and no two papers are identically hard. Raw marks across shifts are therefore not comparable. NTA converts each candidate's raw score to a percentile within their own shift, then merges the shifts. A slightly harder shift does not penalise you, because everyone in that shift faced it.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips
  • Your best of two sessions counts. NTA takes the better NTA score, not the average, so appearing in both sessions is almost always worth it.
  • Percentile is carried to seven decimal places โ€” this is what breaks ties before the official tie-break rules apply.
  • A "100 percentile" is not 300/300. It means nobody in your session scored above you.
  • Do not compare your marks with a friend in a different shift. Compare percentiles.

Percentile to rank #

Rank is derived from the merged percentile list across all sessions. Approximately:

Rank โ‰ˆ (100 โˆ’ your percentile) รท 100 ร— total candidates

With roughly 12 lakh candidates, 99 percentile puts you near rank 12,000 and 95 percentile near rank 60,000.

JEE Main marks vs percentile โ€” frequently asked questions

How is JEE Main percentile calculated?
Percentile equals the number of candidates scoring at or below you in your session, divided by the total candidates in that session, multiplied by 100. It is calculated within your shift and then merged across sessions.
Is percentile the same as percentage in JEE Main?
No. Percentage is your marks out of 300. Percentile is the share of candidates who scored at or below you, so it depends entirely on how others performed.
How many marks for 99 percentile in JEE Main?
Roughly 200 to 250 marks out of 300 in recent cycles, though the exact figure shifts every year with paper difficulty and candidate numbers.
Why do multiple students get 100 percentile in JEE Main?
Each shift produces its own top scorer, and every shift topper receives a 100 percentile. With many shifts across two sessions, several candidates reach 100.
Does the average of both JEE Main sessions count?
No. NTA takes the better of your two session scores, which is why appearing in both sessions is almost always worthwhile.
How do I convert JEE Main percentile to rank?
Approximately, rank equals 100 minus your percentile, divided by 100, multiplied by the total number of candidates. With around 12 lakh candidates, 99 percentile is near rank 12,000.
