JEE Main counselling is JoSAA, the single process allocating all NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats (alongside IIT seats for JEE Advanced qualifiers). One registration, one choice list, typically five or six rounds — followed by CSAB special rounds for leftover seats. State counselling for home-state engineering colleges is separate and runs on its own timeline, often using JEE Main scores too.

Many states admit on JEE Main rank, so register for your state counselling even if you expect a JoSAA seat. It costs little and is the most common safety net.
Step 1: Register on JoSAA and fill choices #
Every institute-branch pair is a separate choice. Order by genuine preference, and fill generously — a short list is the main reason candidates go unallotted.
Step 2: Accept and choose float, slide or freeze #
Float considers any higher choice anywhere; slide considers higher choices within your allotted institute; freeze stops all movement.
Step 3: Report and pay on time #
Missing the seat-acceptance fee or document verification deadline forfeits the seat outright.
Step 4: Plan for CSAB #
After JoSAA closes, CSAB special rounds fill remaining seats. It is a separate registration and a genuine second chance.
- Home State Quota at NITs is roughly half the seats and closes several percentile points lower. It is often worth more than a marginally better branch elsewhere.
- Keep category, PwD and income certificates in the exact prescribed format and current year. Document mismatches cost more seats than marks do.
- Withdrawal is allowed until a stated round; after that you are committed.
- Do not skip state counselling as a backup. Registration windows often close before JoSAA finishes.
